Obviously, the person that asks this question is:
1.) Not really interested in an answer.
2.) Not really interested in discussing the topic seriously.
3.) At best, confused about the definitions of words they nevertheless insist on using.
4.) At worst, guilty of attempting psychological intimidation.
Consider two possible answers that their question seems to beg:
1.) “Oh, no! I want you to think I am intelligent, so I will change my mind like a little mindless sheep and say that I really do believe in God.”
2.) “Well, since I don’t believe in God, I suppose I am unintelligent.”
Faith in God is useless if you have certain knowledge that God exists. And since there is no evidence, facts or knowledge yet established (nor will there ever be for that matter) that there is a God, it is properly stated that one has “faith in God”. It’s not like the coffee table in your living room. Do you really want to argue about its existence? Besides Ivory Tower Blockhead Professors of Modern Philosophy, how many people regularly debate, argue and fight over such an issue? If factual information were available about the existence of God would it be such an issue? Of course not. If it were clearly established that God existed, people would take it for granted like the existence of your coffee table and go about their business.
This is clearly Not The Case.
The fact that fossil records exist has helped establish the creatures that have existed on the planet and approximately when they lived. Fossil records, for example, show that dinosaurs existed and became extinct about 65 million years ago. The records also show that Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon Man preceded Homo sapiens. Fossil records do not yet show how Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon got to us. And, physicists are still uncovering the fundamental mechanisms that underlie the workings of the universe. Another point of misunderstanding is contained in the statements: “We evolved from the apes” and “We didn’t evolve from the apes”. Both are mistaken. The point of the Theory of Macro-Evolution is that humans and apes have a common ancestor.
In the end, all I can say is that I hope I live long enough to see some serious minded scientist using logic, reason and evidence to figure out the exact process. And the same with the whole Theories of the Universe situation. Yes, for rational human beings these are exciting times to be alive!
Sorry about the rest of you.
